Master of HORROR: Stephen King praises Green Inferno

The master of horror Stephen King has spoken… and he loved the Green Inferno!

The famed author gave his endorsement of the film when he posted this tweet after watching the movie; "THE GREEN INFERNO is like a glorious throwback to the drive-in movies of my youth: bloody, gripping, hard to watch, but you can’t look away.”

Director Eli Roth replied saying he was speechless after reading King’s comment; “Genuinely speechless. Stephen King is my hero. I cannot even begin to express what this means to me. Wow.

After almost seven years, horror mastermind Eli Roth, returns to the big screen with a new, more twisted and blood-soaked film-- The Green Inferno.

In the horror genre, says Roth, “the scare is the star.” Rather than A-list names, a horror film requires “good actors, a good script and a director who understands how to shoot and edit it.”

This time he is not out to scare backpackers looking for some “Hostel” fun in Europe, instead shifting his lens to another popular held nightmare—that the jungles are still full of voracious man-eaters—to whom white (and ideally virginal) flesh is a delicacy.

The Green Inferno tells the story of what happens when “slacktivism”—the well-meaning social-media response to global catastrophes turns deadly deep in a South American rainforest.

Charismatic young activist Alejandro inspires his fellow students with a rousing story about an untouched Peruvian jungle about to be destroyed by a greedy energy company looking to exploit its natural resources. Soon eight young protestors, including Justine, the daughter of a U.N. official, and her roommate Kaycee, are headed to this remote Amazon village to ward off the bulldozers. But when their small plane crashes in the jungle, they are horrified to discover that the tribe they came to save still practices the ancient rite of cannibalism.

For the main character of Justine, Roth cast Chilean-born model-turned-actress Lorenza Izzo, whose previous credits include Aftershock, Sex Ed and Hemlock Grove. “Lorenza has an amazing combination of riveting on-screen presence, incredible natural beauty and a sweetness that makes her sympathetic and likeable,” says the director.  Playing Justine’s roommate Kaycee is singer-songwriter Sky Ferreira. “Sky and Lorenza are close friends so the onscreen chemistry really worked,” Roth observes.

Other members of the ensemble include Daryl Sabara (Spy Kids), Kirby Bliss Blanton (Project X), Magda Apanowicz (“Caprica”) and newcomer Aaron Burns. Sabara, who plays another student, Lars, was impressed with Roth’s lean, fast- moving shooting style. Rounding out the cast are Ariel Levy, Nicolás Martínez and Ignacia Allamand.

To make the film work Roth cast a real Peruvian tribe called the Callanayacu tribe he discovered deep in the Amazon while scouting for a location. The Callanayacu tribe lived a life that has not changed for for hundreds of years, did not know about electricity and have never seen or heard about movies or TV.

So to give them an idea of what they would be doing and imitating, Roth and crew brought a generator, a TV and perhaps the craziest choice to introduce the tribe to “the magical world of movies”---he made them watch the 1980 grindhouse film, Cannibal Holocaust.

“We had to explain to them conceptually what a movie was, and showed them Cannibal Holocaust—and they thought it was the funniest thing that they had ever seen---but we had to know whether they were down with it to let us in their village,” Roth said in an interview.

The perils of the river, the jungle’s unpredictable weather conditions, the heat, stinging insects and other unfamiliar creatures, made The Green Inferno shoot a rite of passage for many of the young cast and crew members.

“Thank God no one got killed, but there were tarantulas, spider bites, there were snakes. It was INSANE, everybody had to get de-parasited afer we got back,” Roth said.

“No one made it out unscathed, “All the actors were cut, bruised and bitten. They all signed up for an adventure, but were thrilled when we made it back to the city.”

Released locally by Solar Pictures, The Green Inferno, is now showing in cinemas.

UPCOMING: The Green Inferno finally opens in PHL

GREEN INFERNO FINALLY GETS THE GREEN LIGHT

After more than a year of waiting, horror movie fans will finally get to see perhaps the most disturbing, and controversial films of the year—THE GREEN INFERNO.

The Green Inferno Movie Poster

Ahead of its US release, Solar Pictures unleashes the Green Inferno in local cinemas nationwide beginning September 23, 2015.

Directed by Eli Roth, the horror mastermind behind such groundbreaking films as Cabin Fever and the blockbuster Hostel franchise, Green Inferno is a terrifying, twisted and blood-soaked take on the a digital-age phenomenon known as “slacktivism.”

The Green Inferno tells the story of what happens when “slacktivism”—the well-meaning social-media response to global catastrophes—turns deadly deep in a South American rainforest.

When a group of college students take their humanitarian protest to the Amazon jungle, they are taken prisoner by the indigenous tribe they came to save. Trapped in a remote tribal village, these naïve, technology- dependent students suffer unspeakable acts as the victims of chilling and soul- destroying rituals reserved for only the most threatening intruders.

In early 2012 Eli Roth was working on a script about a group of college students who try to solve the world’s problems by using online videos to publicly embarrass anyone they see as doing wrong. Before he finished writing it, an organization called Invisible Children made the video “KONY 2012,” which urged viewers to help take down Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony.
Fueled by a worldwide social-media frenzy, the video was viewed more than 100 million times. Soon, however, the campaign came under intense criticism for oversimplifying—and in some cases misrepresenting—a complex situation, and the organization’s founder, Jason Russell, suffered a very public breakdown.

Roth was amazed that these real-life events so closely mirrored the central premise of The Green Inferno.

“Everyone in the world was tweeting about something they had learned from a YouTube video, and almost shaming other people into re-tweeting it, as if you were uncaring about Ugandan child soldiers if you didn’t,” he recalls. In the end, the KONY 2012 campaign did almost nothing to solve the problems it highlighted. Yes, it raised awareness, but just re-tweeting links to YouTube videos isn’t actually going to stop warlords.”

For Roth, the controversy surrounding KONY 2012 validated The Green Inferno’s core conceit—the idea that “slacktivism” is often just a way for social media users to feel like they are doing something about horrific events that are completely beyond their control. “It came from a good place, wanting to help others in a far corner of the world,” says Roth. “But ultimately it was more about people feeling better about themselves.”

Although the film offers a pointed commentary on this uniquely 21st-century trend, Roth’s primary goal is more visceral: to share with audiences his love for blood- curdling movie mayhem. “Horror movies were my passion growing up, and my favorite thing was being scared and watching scary, gory movies with my friends,” he says. “I love to terrify people. As things get worse in this world, and people feel a loss of control over things, they need an outlet, a place they are allowed to be really scared. Where better than in a horror movie?”

About Me: My midterm in theology.

Midterms are all about exams but in our theology subject, it's a different one. It's a take-home examination then the questions ain't hard enough. It's about myself. It's about my life, it's about how carry on my past, present, and future me. Here it is.

A. Genesis
Hello! I’m Kharl Angelo Vargas. I was born last December 16, 1998 at 7:43AM in Delos Santos Medical Center, E. Rodriguez Sr., Quezon City. I have my best and superior parents namely Diogenes M. Vargas who is working at Bingo Bonanza and Lorence A. Vargas who is working as domestic helper OFW. I have also my cute but not really cute brothers and sister namely (I’m the oldest) – Jan Kiervinz Vargas, Klyde Andrei Vargas, Kylril Fiona Vargas, and Jeor Kirztian Vargas. 2 of them are now in high school. 1 of them is graduating from elementary. Speaking of schools, I graduated in pre-school at Joyful Hands Kiddie Center, unfortunately, because of my limited age as entering elementary, I need 1 (one) more year to enter primary level. In due of that, I repeat my kinder school at Roosevelt College in Cubao, fortunately, I graduated in that school in full of honors because it’s just only a repetition of studies to satisfy my age (6 yrs. Old) in elementary. I graduated in elementary at Immaculate Conception Cathedral School. I graduated in high school at Quezon City High School.
2 most memorable/meaning experiences that happened to me, one in childhood years, when I was in the 2nd floor in our house, my mom is with me but she is busy in household work. Out of nowhere, I went to stairs innocently staring below, suddenly, I slipped then I forgot what happened after. I just woke up ridden in a tricycle at night, I don’t know what happened to me, my mind is not sure of what happened to me as I don’t experience any pain. I just realized as I grew up that it was an accident, proven in my forehead, there’s still a mark of stitch. This had given me an idea that my life now is a 2nd chance. Second, when I was in high school years, it’s all about again the life, last 2013, I had so many challenges in life, one month full of cough that the doctor said that it is only a normal cough but it last a month even though I’m taking a medicine. After few months, accidentally, our dog bit me in my foot; all of the animals have rabies so I must take injection to avoid infections. After few months, another breath-taking event in my life happened to me, I was positive in dengue, my platelets got low but it was treated immediately so it’s not went seriously. Anyways, I thank God for that year 2013 that I’m still alive! This had given me an idea again right now, at the moment, my life is 3rd chance. We only live once so we must take it seriously. Just pray and God will do the way.

Problems and Challenges in life? I’ve just said it in my 2 most memorable/meaningful experiences in my life but I had more that gave me lessons in life. One of which, when my parents almost split, as ‘kuya’ in our home, I don’t know what to do. That time, my parents had struggle and always having miscommunications in financial speaking, in due of that, they’re planned to quit and break the family but we didn’t. We tried our best as one (my siblings) to reconnect again the broken lines in our family especially in our parents. If they split, maybe it’s another conflict in the relationship of everyone in our family. Hope is a four-letter word, this had given our family to rebuild again and live the life to the fullest. Second is when I have no self-control, mood swing always, for instance, I’m just happy then later sad, I can’t control my feelings and I think that is my sick. That’s always my problem, because of that, sometimes, people hate me, sometimes people love me. I don’t want that because I know myself but I can’t control, maybe I need a physician to consult my feelings. I’m just thinking positive to control the best I can to treat my environment happily.
C. Prophets
Significant people in my life, I can’t define them specifically but there’s one – God. He’s the man! He’s my savior, he’s my best friend, and he’s my brother. Whenever I had problems in life, I’ve just talked to him anywhere, anytime. I feel relieved whenever I prayed to him. This could help me to live peacefully and happily. Next is my family, they are my inspiration in my life, if I’m down, I will just turn back the happy moments in my mind especially my mom, she’s the one that cheering me up when I’m always negative. She’s always giving me good vibes when I had some much bad times. She’s giving me smile to wear everyday and I hope she’s also smiling working for us, my siblings. (Thank you mom!), last, is my friends, they are my 2nd family, almost half of my life are my friends that’s why if there’s a problem, they are just like a standee that if I approach, they would help me the best they can. Thank you for all the significant people in Life. They just proved to me that I must live longer because they are my life.

Inspirational song, which is Who Am I? By Casting Crowns
Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done

Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I'm calling
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling
And You've told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours

E. Gospel
            Heralds
First and foremost, the good news I’ve heard is I’m born in this world. This is the very good news that I’ve ever heard because without this news, I can’t have 4 more good news in this Gospel. (hahahaha!) Anyway, I don’t know who the person behind of that is, maybe God, Jesus, guardian angels, saints, my parents, or even the doctors. Thank you for that first and very good news to me.
Second is that I was born a Filipino, I was baptized as Christian, and I had my family. No one gave that good news to me but I experienced and I’m so very thankful. I was so blessed to have it in my information. Being on that way is very satisfied and good news to me.
Third, when my classmates in 4th year high school elected me as their President in our class. I didn’t expect that they will vote for me even though they had said they would. (Because I don’t take it seriously hahahaha!) That good news came from my classmates. Being the President of the class somehow a dream come true because I want to be a leader someday. That was a training for me.
Fourth, there was a promo or event at Araneta Center, it is known for its awesome and superb Christmas celebration. Last 2014, I won in their promo, guess what? I’m one of the lucky people who will light the Giant Christmas Tree in Araneta. In their Facebook account, they announced the winners; probably good news came from the administrators of their FB account. One of the best days of my life, being one of the people that lit the Giant Christmas Tree. It marked me the best Christmas of my life as of now.
Last, when I get passed in the entrance exam in Adamson University. That is my dream school, 5 years ago when I hooked up to be an Adamsonian someday. A good news from the machine that validated my exam score hahahaha! Good news also from my parents that they prefer me to study in Adamson even though the tuition is high.
F. Acts
My personal goals in life are first, graduating all of my studies from pre-school up to college degree. A big thing for a student if he/she graduated fully-accomplished, big thanks for my parents for their efforts to help me pursue my studies. Speaking of my parents, my second goal is about them, because of their efforts from the start, I want to return all of their favors to me and also to my siblings. Maybe I would let their dreams come true and that is to be done someday! My last goal is my dreams do come true. Being a politician to help my fellowmen is the important thing to me. I hope I’ll kick the ball and set a goal in my awesome life.
G. Epistles
My source of inspiration, first is God, he’s the one! Guiding me always, whenever I have problems, I will just pray and somehow I feel relieve after. When there are obstacles, I know, this is only a challenge and I’m thinking about God that he would not let me give up. Second, my family, they are the one who also guides me every day, if there’s a problem, I will just open my wallet that has a family picture inside it. Thinking about them can be a good inspiration. Third, my friends, they are my 2nd family, because of them, I feel also happy every day that I’m not alone. Half of my life is in school when almost all of my friends are there. They are shading the half of my happiness fraction per day. Fourth, my fellowmen, this is how I pursue my dream, because of being a Political Science student, I want to be a politician someday; I want to help my fellowmen, because of them that’s why I’m studying Political Science. Not being boastful of what I am, I think, I was born for this, to be a leader someday, to help my fellowmen, to have may naturalism, and to fly high my country to the world. Lastly, myself, yes, me. It’s because without myself, I’m not here literally in this world. Love yourself before others because it will be a big help to stand, rise, and shine. All of my inspirations, all of them are always there, I hope no one would be vanished because it looks like a puzzle to build my dreams, without a single piece, maybe I cannot pursue my dreams. Thank you to all my inspirations - God, Family, Friends, Fellowmen, and myself.
H. Revelation
I, 10 years from now, it’s hard to imagine but it will find a way. Maybe I’m a journalist, politician, lawyer, diplomat, reporter, script writer, professor, singer, actor, or even a father. I have so many fields in life (Thank God for all the talents that you had given to me.) but because there is only one field that I can pursue (I think, I can have many fields but it’s safe to say there’s only one.), a politician, that’s why I’m studying Political Science. Maybe I will be a Barangay Kagawad, Barangay Captain, Councilor, or even a Mayor of city. I see myself helping my kababayan who needs help, like a superhero. I will do my job the best I can and hopefully there’s no barrier to it. I see also myself with my own family with tender, love, and care and also my family with my mom, dad, and my siblings living happily together. Hopefully my imagination 10 years from now can be done in the next 10 years. TIWALA LANG!
